Dr. Erwin Cortez was born in California and grew up in the Philippines. He received his medical degree from the University of Santo Thomas in 1983 and completed both an internship and residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the university hospital.
Dr. Cortez returned to the United States with his family, completing a second residency in PM&R at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He is currently board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties in PM&R.
Prior to pursuing a practice in pain medicine, Dr. Cortez worked for the Department of Health and Human Services, caring for the mentally and developmentally delayed. The experience deepened his appreciation for aspects of our lives that are often taken for granted; including personal independence, physical functionality and quality of life. It also provided valuable insights on the ways that pain interferes with day-to-day living.
Dr. Cortez finds his work in pain intervention and management highly rewarding. He is experienced in the use of procedures, medications and other therapies to provide relief. His patients describe him as upbeat, personable, and a good listener who truly cares.
